’49ers to sell Leeds United to Red Bull’ – Fans explode at Rangers takeover news
Leeds fans have been left puzzled after news after an update regarding a potential takeover of Rangers by their majority owners 49ers Enterprises.
Rangers could be taken over by San Francisco 49ers after reports revealed that Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe is in discussions to invest in the Glasgow club.
Marathe, who is also the 49ers’ executive vice-president of football operations, currently oversees the group’s stake at Leeds.
However, the prospect of an imminent takeover at Rangers has left some Leeds supporters wondering whether this could pave the way for the Americans to depart Elland Road and for Red Bull to take full control of their own club.

Red Bull could take over Leeds if Rangers deal progresses
Red Bull acquired a minority stake in Leeds in June 2023, not fully adding the club to its growing football portfolio, which includes teams in Germany, Austria, and the Americas.
Red Bulls’ deal with Leeds was described as one of the best financial deals the club has ever secured. Their involvement has already resulted in their logo appearing on Leeds’ shirts as a sponsor. However, this has raised concerns among fans that if they were to take full ownership, it could lead to a complete rebrand.
Supporters are wary of Leeds following in the footsteps of other Red Bull-owned clubs, such as RB Leipzig and FC Red Bull Salzburg, which underwent name and colour changes under the company’s ownership. The introduction of red on Leeds’ kit was already met with frustration, given the club’s historic rivalry with Manchester United.
With the 49ers reportedly looking to sell a 10% stake of the NFL franchise, valued at around $9 billion (£7.15 billion), it remains to be seen how this could impact ownership at Elland Road. If Rangers join the 49ers’ investment circle, it could accelerate a shift in Leeds’ ownership structure.

Leeds fans frustrated over Rangers takeover update
49ers Enterprises took control of Leeds United in June 2023 after striking a deal with former owner Andrea Radrizzani’s Aser Ventures.
Their gradual takeover saw them first acquire a minority stake, then increase their holdings over time before eventually purchasing the club outright. This has led to speculation that a similar situation could unfold with Red Bull, with some fans convinced that a full takeover is inevitable.
One supporter reacted to the news by saying, “I’m convinced they’ve already sold to Red Bull anyway” while another questioned, “Eh? So LUFC could soon be known as RB Leeds?”
