As the dust settles on another Premier League campaign, the Newcastle United squad can look back on their season with a great deal of pride heading into the summer.

Coming up as the champions of England’s second tier, the Magpies were among the lowest spenders in the transfer market and as a result played the majority of their season with players who had been turning out in the Championship 12 months previous.

However, Rafael Benitez and his men defied the critics and pulled off a mighty impressive 10th placed finish, leading all the newly promoted sides, the three of which survived relegation back down to where they came from, as well as more established Premier League sides.

The squad deserve huge credit for their achievements, but few would argue that there were some men who stood head and shoulders above the rest.

Here, Football Insider has picked out the five men who were the shining lights during the Magpies’ season, including a 6’3″ giant who had a surprise impact on the Newcastle squad.
