£70,000-a-week offer made for midfield goal machine wanted by Tottenham - report
Watford have offered midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure a new contract worth £70,000-a-week as he begins to attract attention from the Premier League elite, according to a report.
The Express claims that the Hornets are desperate to keep a hold of Doucoure, 25, and are keen to make him their highest paid player after the French enforcer confirmed that he is wanted by Tottenham, Arsenal and Liverpool.
It is understood that Watford could have a busy summer of fending off interest in their best players, including Doucoure and attacker Richarlison.
Doucoure has been in top form this season, scoring seven goals and supplying three assists in 28 appearances across all competitions – mostly in the deeper-lying midfield area.
The Daily Mail had reported earlier this month that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino went on a personal scouting mission to watch the midfield goal machine play against Chelsea in the Premier League.
The report added that Watford value Doucoure at over £20million and pay him £60,000-a-week, so it seems that the Hornets have offered him quite the payrise with this latest offer.
Football Insider verdict
Tottenham are widely praised for the strength of their squad and many suggest that it’s hard to see where it needs strengthening. However it’s pretty clear that the position Pochettino must bolster next is in the centre of midfield. While Mousa Dembele has been in brilliant form this season, he is not getting any younger and Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier lack consistency and ability to step up in big games. Doucoure is not really an improvement on them. The former Rennes midfielder seems to be a player who has found his peak at Watford and a move to the big guns in England could end up in failure.
