Sources: Danny Rohl makes decision about Rangers raiding Sheffield Wednesday in January

Danny Rohl has begun to turn results around in his short time at Rangers boss after he arrived to replace Russell Martin earlier this month.

Rangers beat Hibernian 1-0 last time out, with Rohl enjoying a strong start, and they are now making plans for the January transfer window to further bolster his plans.

As a result, the boss has been heavily linked with recruiting from his former club Sheffield Wednesday.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown first told Football Insider in April that Rohl would quit Sheffield Wednesday due to concerns about Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.

Wednesday went into administration on 24 October, officially ending Chansiri’s ownership, but putting the club into another difficult financial situation.

Multiple billionaires are interested in buying Sheffield Wednesday, in what is seen as positive news for the club, with the process to find new ownership underway.

As is often the case with clubs placed into administration, the vultures begin to circle with offers for their best and most promising players in mind.

However, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Rangers are unlikely to make moves for any of Sheffield Wednesday’s squad despite the links with Rohl, and instead are focused on utilising their current options.

This comes as the likes of Josh Windass, Akin Famewo and Callum Patterson left on free transfers under Chansiri’s ownership, while Rangers poached Djeidi Gassama.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “Yeah, that’s an opportunity for a lot of clubs if they want to sign any players from Sheffield Wednesday with the ongoing financial issues.

“The other thing is when you look at the Sheffield Wednesday squad, it’s very threadbare as well. So maybe that would reduce the options for anybody that Danny Rohl will be interested in.

“So I don’t think it’d be a priority for him right now to go back and maybe sign some players from Sheffield Wednesday.

“The main focus is for Sheffield Wednesday is now to find new owners and then hopefully they’ll be able to invest in the squad and strengthen it.

“But yeah, I think the squad is obviously very stretched at minute at Wednesday and a lot of young players as well in that squad that they’ve needed to play because the squad is so thin.

“So Danny Rohl will be looking elsewhere if he is to strengthen that Rangers squad in January.”

Rangers make January transfer plan under Danny Rohl

Football Insider revealed on 28 October that Rangers want three new players in January, with a new striker, left-back and midfielder on their radar.

There is a growing feeling that Rohl would like to bolter his squad and help to mould the starting XI to fit his style rather than Martin’s.

Meanwhile, speculation surrounding the future of Nicolas Raskin has forced them to consider potential replacements should he make a move away.

However, Football Insider revealed on 25 October that Rangers’ spending will be restricted in January after spending big in an attempt to back Martin in the summer.

The board will be more tentative about backing the ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss straight away and are likely to be cautious after his predecessor’s poor spell at the club.
