Liverpool could quadruple revenue with ‘Netflix of football’ deal – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Liverpool and Premier League clubs could “quadruple” TV revenue with a new streaming-based model.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the “revolutionary” change is coming and could bring a ‘Netflix of Football’ to fans’ screens.
The Premier League announced on 22 November that clubs have unanimously agreed that they will establish a new in-house media operations business from the 2026-27 season.
Production has previously been handled in partnership with IMG for the past 20 years.
There has long been talk of the Premier League establishing a direct-to-consumer streaming service, but the current domestic TV deal is set to run until the 2028-29 campaign.
UK fans currently need subscriptions on three different platforms to watch every televised top-flight game.
‘Netflix of Football’ is coming, says Wyness
Reacting to the in-house production announcement, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This is the Premier League setting their media rights.
“The model has always been very strong – becoming what is often called the ‘Netflix of Football’ with the Premier League.
“The problem has always been the setup cost for the two or three years as you build your subscriber list.
“It’s a very expensive operation as they’ll have to setup commentators, put the teams together, get the in-house production together, etc.
“You’d need probably three years to become functional. I know there are big investment banks like JPMorgan who are willing to bankroll that.

“We all know that new model could double, triple, or even quadruple the TV revenue if it is successful.
“I think that is the way we are going with this IMG deal. We’re on the way to seeing this and it could be revolutionary.”
