‘A big low’ – Mark Goldbridge slams Man United decision that will lose club millions

Mark Goldbridge has questioned why Manchester United haven’t appealed the EFL’s decision not to kick Grimsby Town out of the Carabao Cup.

Man United were defeated on penalties by Grimsby on Wednesday, 27 August, after playing out a 2-2 draw with the League Two side.

Meanwhile, David Artell’s side used midfielder Clarke Oduor, who was ineligible after being registered one minute too late to play in the fixture.

However, the EFL decided to fine Grimsby on Tuesday, 2 September, rather than expelling the League Two side from the Carabao Cup.

Mark Goldbridge slams Man United for lack of Carabao Cup appeal

After being beaten by Grimsby, Man United bounced back by winning 3-2 against Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday, 30 August.

However, supporters are still disappointed by their premature Carabao Cup exit at the hands of fourth-tier opponents.

Taking to X on Tuesday, 8 September, The United Stand’s Goldbridge said: “Surprising United aren’t appealing that Grimsby illegal player thing.

“Morally yeah, it’s a big low but we’re broke. Being back in that tournament could be worth millions.”

Ruben Amorim must start performing after the international break

Football Insider verdict

Ruben Amorim suffered the embarrassment of failing to guide Man United to a top-half spot in the Premier League last season.

Meanwhile, the beginning of the new campaign for the Red Devils has been largely defined by their Carabao Cup defeat at Grimsby on 27 August.

Man United resultsAll competitions 2025/26
Arsenal (H)0-1 L
Fulham (A)1-1 D
Grimsby (A)2-2 D (Grimsby won 12-11 on penalties)
Burnley (H)3-2 W
The Red Devils have started the season poorly

Perhaps Amorim can be forgiven for some of the shortcomings of last season, because he was working with players signed by former managers Erik ten Hag and Ole Gunnar Solsjkjaer.

Meanwhile, the former Sporting boss utilised the summer transfer window as Man United signed goalkeeper Senne Lammens, attackers Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha, as well as defender Diego Leon.

Furthermore, Amorim successfully facilitated the departures of Jadon Sancho, Rasmus Hojlund, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and Marcus Rashford.

Therefore, now that he has built his own squad, the Red Devils boss must enjoy successful results when the Old Trafford club return to action after the international break.
