'A lot of money' - Exclusive: Celtic taking risk as big signing reported close - Pundit claim
Alan Hutton claims that Celtic are taking a risk as they close in on the signing of AEK Athens goalkeeper Vasilios Barkas to replace Fraser Forster.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Rangers and Scotland defender insists the Hoops are splashing out a decent amount of money for the 26-year-old.
As reported by the Scottish Sun, Barkas flew into Glasgow on Tuesday evening and was scheduled to have his medical today (Wednesday, 29 July) ahead of his £4.5million move.
Neil Lennon lost both Forster and Craig Gordon during the summer, with the former returning to parent club Southampton and the latter moving to Hearts on a free transfer.
Hutton admits that Barkas has got big gloves to fill and that Celtic are risking a lot of money on the Greece international’s ability.
Hutton told Football Insider: “It’s a lot of money, I think he’s played a lot of games and he’s an international goalkeeper so you’d like to think he’s got that experience behind him but I think it’s always a risk.

“It’s like signing any player who’s an unknown, if you like, it’s always going to be a risk but they must see something in him. I’m sure they would have had scouts watching him.
“The thing with Celtic is, with less than a week left until the season starts, they’ve not had a number one in. It seems the Forster thing has just died a death so they needed someone in. They must have been tracking this guy, they don’t sign people on a whim.
“They’ll be hoping he can come in and be the stature that Forster was.”
Scott Bain has been a mainstay for the Bhoys during the club’s pre-season preparations, despite his lack of playing time last season.
The 28-year-old featured just eight times across all competitions as a thumb injury kept him sidelined for most of the campaign.
In other Celtic news, Hutton has been left raving as a player barely seen in pre-season has blown Lennon away.
