Hull City star and Celtic fan Jackson Irvine has admitted he will be “devastated” if Rangers complete the signing of Liverpool’s Harry Wilson – calling the winger “incredibly talented” after his time with the Tigers.
Wilson has been linked by the Daily Record with a move to the Light Blues as part of Steven Gerrard’s Rangers revolution and could join Scott Arfield, Allan McGregor and Jamie Murphy as summer recruits at Ibrox.
Irvine believes that if his former teammate Wilson does head to Ibrox then it will be a “real coup” for the Light Blues – and insists they’ll have had to beat top English clubs to his signature, having turned out 14 times for Hull during a half-season loan spell.
“As a Celtic fan, I’ll be devastated if Harry goes to Rangers. This kid is incredibly talented,” Irvine said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“He’s not lightning quick but he has an ability just to glide past players. And he’s terrific in the final third.
“I was so close to voting for Harry as our player of the year and he only came in January. He was that influential.
“If Rangers get him they’ll be doing well because they’ll have had to fight clubs in England. He has so much potential and if Rangers get him it’ll be a real coup.”
Football Insider verdict:
Wilson was a stand-out for Hull last season after joining on loan an would be a fantastic signing for the Ibrox giants. The Liverpool flyer is unlikely to force his way into the Liverpool starting XI next season and a spell away getting regular game-time would continue to help his development and give him a better shot of making a mark at Anfield. Working with Steven Gerrard closely would no doubt be a big draw for the attacker too as the incoming Gers boss takes his first steps into management. Wilson has already shown he is a very capable footballer and is only going to continue to improve as he matures. If the Light Blues can get him to Ibrox for a season then he would light up the Scottish Premiership and be a massive player for the Gers – even if only temporarily. The Gers just need to get a deal over the line now and get to player up to Glasgow
