A Tottenham fan could defend better than ‘disgraceful’ Sanchez – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed a Tottenham supporter could have defended better than Davinson Sanchez against NS Mura on Thursday.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, branded the 24-year-old a “disgrace to the shirt” after the shock 2-1 defeat in Slovenia.

Sanchez allowed Mura’s Tomi Horvat to cut inside onto his left foot to hit the opening goal.

Whelan slammed the centre-back’s overall performance against the Slovenian minnows.

He suggested a fan in the stands could have done a better job than the Colombian.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You look at Sanchez, that is pathetic defending. Pathetic.

“It was a bad display all night but that was pathetic.

“I guarantee you there were Tottenham fans in the stadium that could have defended better than that kid last night.

“This is where we’re at with Tottenham now. There were so many out there who were a disgrace to the shirt last night.”

Sanchez was making his third appearance under Antonio Conte against Mura.

It was the 45-cap Colombia international’s first start since the Italian manager’s appointment.

He was partnered alongside Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga in a back three.

However, Ryan Sessegnon’s early red card meant the defence shuffled to a back-four.

Sanchez has played a total of 11 times across all competitions for Spurs.

Conte also has Eric Dier to call upon at centre-back.

Cristian Romero is set for a spell on the sidelines after Conte confirmed he had suffered a “serious” injury blow.

In other news, pundit claims another Tottenham star should never wear the shirt again.
