Noel Whelan insists that young Leeds United striker Ryan Edmondson has been a wasted talent at Elland Road as he sets his sights on a summer move.

The former Leeds striker and boyhood fan at Elland Road, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has been left fuming that the teenager has not been given a chance in the first team this season.

As revealed by Football Insider last week, the 19-year-old believes he has outgrown youth football and is looking to kick start his senior career with either a loan or permanent move this summer.

The youngster is heading into the final year of his contract at Elland Road and there are numerous Football League clubs keen on his capture.

Whelan insists that Edmondson could have offered something different for Marcelo Bielsa and admits he has been bitterly disappointed he has not been given a chance to shine.

Whelan told Football Insider: “A player that’s done immensely well in the under-23s, really, really disappointed he’s not been given an opportunity because the kid has got something different to offer.

“You think we’ve got absolutely no strikers on the bench and still not used him. I know he might have an injury but at the same time, throughout this season we’ve been struggling for centre-forwards.

“There can’t be any danger in putting him on the bench or throwing him on to give us something a little bit different and ask him to prove himself. He’s not been given that opportunity so we don’t know whether he could have been a difference.

“To not give him that chance is a waste of talent quite frankly.”

Edmondson has just two Championship appearances under his belt for Leeds so far but neither have come this season.

Patrick Bamford has started all but two of the Whites’ league matches this term, with Eddie Nketiah and Jean-Kevin Augustin both struggling to make an impact on loan.
