Abdoulaye Doucoure reflects on ‘good memory’ pre-Everton amid exit speculation

Everton star Abdoulaye Doucoure has sent an emotional message reflecting on one particular moment from earlier in his playing career.

The midfielder joined the Toffees back in the summer of 2020 when he joined on a permanent deal from Watford.

The signing of Doucoure was viewed as a positive one for Everton, and the former Mali international has indeed gone on to be a strong performer for the club since arriving a Goodison Park.

Even before his move to England though, the midfielder had been making a positive impact during his career for his previous clubs.

Having been born in France, Doucoure initially began his senior career with Rennes, breaking into their first-team in 2012.

The midfielder spent the next four-and-a-half years playing for the Ligue 1 side, scoring 16 goals in 92 appearances on all competitions.

On Friday (28 March), Rennes posted a video of one of those goals the Everton midfielder scored for them, from a 2-0 win at Angers in 2015, ahead of a repeat of that fixture this weekend.

Doucoure himself then shared that clip of him heading home a cross from Pedro Henrique to his own Instagram story before adding a caption that read “good memory” while also tagging the French club.

The Everton midfielder will be back in action on Wednesday (2 April) when his side return after the international break with a trip to Anfield for the Merseyside derby.

Doucoure will be looking to make up for an error that gifted a goal to Liverpool when the two sides met at Goodison Park earlier this year.

Everton work on new Abdoulaye Doucoure contract

As things stand, the midfielder’s contract with the Toffees is due to expire at the end of this season, although his future remains up in the air.

Although they have decided not to trigger a one-year extension in his deal, it is understood that Everton are still looking to negotiate a new contract for Doucoure.

The midfielder remains an important player for David Moyes‘ side, not only due to his ability but also with his presence and popularity.

With that in mind it will likely be a source of frustration for Everton if they he is not at the club next season, especially as they look to show they can get deals done under new owners the Friedkin Group.
