Aberdeen to force ‘huge’ change by blowing away Celtic & Rangers – Keith Wyness
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Celtic losing out to the Dons in the Scottish Premiership title race would herald huge changes.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed broadcast rights would be boosted and could also open the door to an 18-team expansion of the top-flight.
Aberdeen drew 2-2 away at Celtic last week (19 October) to continue their unbeaten start to the 2024-25 campaign under Jimmy Thelin.
The Dons are level on points with the Parkhead club at the top of the Scottish Premiership, with Brendan Rodgers ahead on goal difference.
No club outside the Old Firm has won the Scottish title since the 1984–85 season, when Alex Ferguson led Aberdeen to glory.
Aberdeen defeating Celtic could bring change to 18-team league, says Wyness
Wyness backed Hearts and Hibernian to mount a challenge in the coming years after new investment in Edinburgh.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Aberdeen winning the title would mean a lot in terms of broadcast rights and promotion of the league.
“It would bring a story around the globe if they were able to do it.
“These are the things which make a league competitive. We’re also seeing Hearts getting investment from Tony Bloom at Brighton.
“Hibs have had investment as well.
“There are promising signs that four or five clubs can challenge at the top end.
“That’s what Scottish football has got to get back to, and at some stage you’ve got to look at going from 12 clubs back up to 18.

“There is a positive future.
“It would be a massive story if Aberdeen could do it, but I don’t quite see them pipping Celtic just yet.”
