Former Leeds United star and current Sky Sports pundit David Prutton has revealed he has been stunned by the turnaround in fortunes for Wolves and Reading ahead of their midweek Championship clash.
Nuno’s men were at one point runaway league leaders, although a dip in form has closed the gap at the top, including a 4-1 humiliation to near rivals Aston Villa in their last game, but were fighting at the bottom of the second tier table a year ago.
In stark contrast, Reading were pushing for a play off spot, eventually missing out on a place in the Premier League via a penalty shoot out defeat to Huddersfield, but now sit 19th, having rescued a 2-2 draw with Leeds at home on Saturday.
Now Prutton has stated how shocked he has been by the change a year can make, and feels the current league table will reflect the result.
Predicting a 2-0 win for Wolves, he wrote in his column on Sky Sports’ website: “It seemed like it would be a procession for Nuno’s men until a few weeks ago, but one win in five has allowed their rivals right back into it.
“However, this game feels like an absolute banker for Wolves at the moment.
“It’s hard to believe that this time last year the Royals were pushing for the play-offs and Wolves were scratching around just a couple of points above the drop zone.”
Football Insider verdict
What a difference a year can make, and Prutton’s point proves just how much football can change in a short period of time. Reading have not been in the best of form recently, while Wolves will be hurting after being well and truly blown away by Villa, and coming up against a wounded animal in the form of Nuno and his men could be dangerous for the Royals’ goal difference, with Prutton’s 2-0 prediction looking somewhat conservative. Still, if they catch Wolves on another off day, a surprise result might come their way, but the sensible money would be backing the table toppers all day long.
