‘Absolute liability’, ‘Useless’ – Newcastle United fans savage Sean Longstaff after display in 3-0 win over Sunderland

Newcastle United fans on social media were unhappy with Sean Longstaff’s performance during their 3-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies cruised to a 3-0 win over fierce rivals Sunderland at the Stadium of Light to secure their spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Daniel Ballard opened the scoring with an own-goal just after the half-hour mark, before Alexander Isak’s brace in the second half extended the visitors’ lead.

Isak’s first goal came just moments after the half-time break, and the Swedish striker netted his 11th of the season from the penalty spot late on after a foul by Ballard.

It marked Newcastle’s first win over Sunderland since 2011, with Saturday’s clash being the first time the two sides faced each other since 2016.

Eddie Howe made the decision to drop Lewis Miley from the starting lineup despite the 17-year-old’s impressive debut season so far in 2023/24.

Instead, Howe opted for a midfield trio that included Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.

Longstaff had three chances early on in the first half to hand Newcastle the lead but the 26-year-old lacked composure in front of goal.

Newcastle fans on social media were quick to vent their frustration towards Longstaff, with some demanding that the club sell him.

Following their victory in the Tyne-Wear derby, Newcastle can now turn their attention to their upcoming clash against Manchester City next Saturday (13 January).

The Tyneside club will also discover their FA Cup fourth-round opponents during Monday night’s draw.
