'Absolutely Amazing' - Leeds Exclusive: Whelan hails 'best in the world' after Phil Hay reveal

Noel Whelan claimed it would be “absolutely amazing” if Leeds United were to expand Elland Road as he insisted the “best fans in the world” would have no problem filling it.

The former Whites forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, insisted developing Elland Road has to be the priority over a completely new stadium.

According to The Athletic‘s Phil Hay, “The club have tentative plans to rebuild the West Stand to match the height of the East one, increasing overall capacity to 50,000.”

United would be following in the footsteps of Liverpool who continue to work on developing Anfield rather than moving to a new site as Tottenham did.

The Reds have plans to enlarge the Anfield Road end having already expanded the Main Stand to increase the capacity of the stadium to 54,074.

When asked by Football Insider if he would prioritise an Elland Road expansion over a new state of the art stadium, Whelan said: “It would be amazing. Absolutely amazing. It is what the club needs and it will definitely sell out. The fan base is there.

“It does need some improvement around Elland Road, that is for sure. Would I want to leave Elland Road? Absolutely not. Can we extend it? Look at Liverpool, they did it. Great history at that club like Leeds United. The club needs to be at Elland Road.

“It is not going to money wasted. Those seats, bums will fill them. No doubt. We have the best fans in the world.

“So many new stadiums have no personality. Elland Road has got loads of it. I really would not want to leave. Revamp it and extend it. That is what the fans want.”

Any potential improvements would likely be reliant on promotion. The financial reward the Premier League promises critical to further investment.
