‘Absolutely disastrous’ – Leeds fans fume as ‘shocking’ footage analysed in 3-0 win over Peterborough
Leeds United fans are fuming after they were not awarded a penalty for a challenge on Willy Gnonto in their clash against Peterborough United on Sunday (7 January).
Daniel Farke’s side booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 3-0 win at the Weston Homes Stadium thanks to a brace from Ethan Ampadu and a wonder strike from Patrick Bamford.
However, the Whites could have taken an even stronger win back to Elland Road if referee Sam Allison hadn’t made the “absolutely disastrous” mistake of not awarding a spot-kick for a foul on the young Italian.
Gnonto was taken down by Josh Knight inside the box in the 42nd minute and, despite his strong appeals to the referee, was awarded nothing.
The Posh centre-back clearly made contact with the 19-year-old’s foot as he darted towards goal, but some observers claimed that Gnonto was attempting to initiate the challenge to win a penalty.
However, others countered this point and claimed that if Gnonto had dived, he should have received a second yellow card and been dismissed.
Leeds fans are baffled by the “shocking” decision from the official and have taken to social media to slam the “awful” referee.
