Danny Mills has named just four Tottenham players who are almost guaranteed a place in the side as he highlights the dilemma manager Mauricio Pochettino has on his hands.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Manchester City and England full-back says that Harry Kane, Heung-min Son, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are the only players who have a nailed down spot in the starting XI.
Pochettino made seven changes to his starting XI against Watford on Saturday and he once again shuffled the pack for Tuesday’s clash against Red Star Belgrade, the likes of Harry Winks, Lucas Moura and Danny Rose dropping out.
Mills says that Pochettino has decisions to make all over the pitch when it comes to selecting his starting XI, especially in the middle of the park, with only four names likely to remain from game to game.
Mills told Football Insider: “They’re going through this issue now where before the team picked itself, Pochettino had 12 players to choose from and you knew the XI was going to come from that 12.
“Now it’s a little bit different. The two centre-halves, yes. Left-back is a little bit more debatable, right-back is who knows who that’s going to be?
“The midfield is the biggest issue. You have to play Harry Kane, you should play Heung-min Son as well because I think he’s absolutely outstanding and then what formation, who do you play with that, is the biggest test.
“Who do you play in that midfield area and what formation? There are so many players in that area and the players who were so consistent and so good last season aren’t in the same sort of form.”
Spurs have won just one of their last four league outings after Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Watford, with a trip to an as-yet undefeated Liverpool side the next test for Pochettino and his men.
The Lilywhites will then return to Merseyside a week later to take on Everton at Goodison Park before travelling to Belgrade for their fourth Champions League match of the campaign.
In other Tottenham news, Danny Mills was left absolutely fuming with one sight at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium over the weekend.
