Adam Wharton reacts to Phil Foden’s message after Man City transfer news

Adam Wharton has been heavily linked to a move to Man City and has reacted to potential future teammate Phil Foden’s recent message on social media.

Wharton joined Crystal Palace in the January 2024 transfer window and quickly adapted to life in the Premier League.

The 21-year-old’s standout performances even earned him a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad, though he was left out of Thomas Tuchel’s first selection.

However, his impressive form has not gone unnoticed, with top Premier League clubs including Man City, who are keeping a close eye on Wharton ahead of a potential summer move.

Fuelling further speculation, Wharton recently engaged with Foden’s latest update as the England squad prepares for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Phil Foden issues England update amid Man City criticism

Foden shared a brief two-word message for supporters, writing: “We back”, alongside training photos from England’s latest session.

His post was met with support from several players, including Wharton, teammate Omar Marmoush, and Tottenham’s Dominic Solanke.

Despite his reputation, Foden has faced criticism from Man City fans this season, with his performances failing to match the influence he had last campaign when he won the PFA Player of the Year award.

The England international has managed just seven Premier League goals so far, leading to debates over whether his form warranted a national team call-up.

However, Tuchel opted to include him, while his City teammate Jack Grealish was left out of the England squad due to inconsistent displays and struggles with fitness.

Man City eye Adam Wharton as potential Rodri successor

Mick Brown, former Man United and Blackburn chief scout, told Football Insider last month that Man City scouts have been tracking Wharton closely since his return to Oliver Glasner’s starting XI following a long-term injury.

City have been long-time admirers of the 21-year-old midfielder, with Football Insider revealing Wharton was considered as a future replacement for Rodri.

Instead, the club moved for Porto’s Nico Gonzalez in January, leaving Wharton at Crystal Palace for the time being.

Despite this, he remains high on City’s transfer shortlist, though prising him away from Selhurst Park would likely require a substantial fee.
