Adam Wharton’s one big weakness was highlighted during Crystal Palace’s defeat to Arsenal

Adam Wharton has been outstanding so far this season but one major flaw in his game was highlighted during Crystal Palace’s trip to the Emirates.

Arsenal beat Palace 1-0 on Sunday (26 October) to move four points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Eberechi Eze, who joined Arsenal from Palace over the summer, scored against his former side to secure all three points for the Gunners.

Mikel Arteta’s side have kept a clean sheet in each of their last five games across all competitions, meaning they have gone through the whole of October without conceding a goal so far.

Adam Wharton at fault for Arsenal goal

Arsenal once again took advantage of a set-piece situation to score the only goal of the game against Crystal Palace.

Declan Rice curled a deep free-kick into the box, with Gabriel rising highest to knock the ball down to Eze on the edge of the area.

The former Palace man connected with the ball on the half volley, sending a scissor kick into the top right-hand corner.

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day 2, former Arsenal winger Theo Walcott criticised Palace midfielder Wharton for losing Eze on the edge of the box, which ultimately led to the goal.

He said: “Wharton is outstanding going forward. However, in these situations you need to position yourself side on and see Eze, and sense the danger. He doesn’t sense the danger, and it’s probably the one weakness in his game.”

Crystal Palace make January decision regarding Adam Wharton’s exit

Despite his mistake against Arsenal, the young midfielder’s impressive performances this season have gained him a lot of admirers.

However, Football Insider revealed on 21 September that Crystal Palace will not sell Wharton in January.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Real Madrid have been linked with the England international.

However, he remains a crucial part of Oliver Glasner‘s plans for the rest of the season, and a move in January is considered highly unlikely as things stand.
