Agbonlahor ‘100%’ sure about career-ending Calum Chambers development after what he saw at Aston Villa
Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Aston Villa defender Calum Chambers’ Premier League career should be over after he was run ragged by Man City in his second league start of this season.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the “slow and sluggish” 28-year-old doesn’t have the attributes of a top-flight defender.
Chambers started against Man City on 12 February in the absence of Tyrone Mings – making his first Premier League start under Unai Emery.
He endured a torrid time at the Etihad Stadium, failing to make a tackle in 90 minutes and missing an interception in the build-up to City’s second goal – with the Citizens going on to win 3-1.
Mings, who has recently signed a new deal at the club, returned to the starting line-up for Saturday’s (18 February) loss against Arsenal at Villa Park.
Chambers has more than two years left to run on his Aston Villa contract, while summer-of-2022 signing Diego Carlos remains out injured with an Achilles problem.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’s 100% not a Premier League defender, for me.
“I’ve watched him at Arsenal, Fulham, and now he’s at Villa – he’s not good enough.
“He’s slow, sluggish, not physical enough – he doesn’t have the attributes of a centre-back.
“He is a squad player for a club at the bottom of the league, at best.

“For him to play against Man City – I knew it was game over when I saw that team sheet.
“Aston Villa need better backup than Calum Chambers.”
