Agbonlahor 100% ‘sure’ about Man United signing ‘top number nine’ soon
Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Man United will have a “top number nine” in place at the club before the start of the 2023-24 campaign.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Red Devils continue to have “great pulling power” despite their run of 11 years without a league title.
Football Insider revealed last week (28 June) that Man United are desperate to add a marquee striker to their squad this summer – amid links to the likes of Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen, Rasmus Hojlund and Randal Kolo Muani.
A well-placed source has revealed that club chiefs are aware an “established” number nine is needed to close the gap to treble-winning rivals Man City.
Man United finished third last term, 14 points behind the eventual title winners, despite not having a prolific striker in their ranks.
Marcus Rashford notched 30 goals across all competitions and often led the line in the wake of Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure last winter.
When asked if Man United can get anywhere near the Premier League title without an established striker, Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “No, no chance.
“Rashford’s been outstanding, and you’d say he can do it again. Antony has been poor, so he’ll need to improve his numbers.
“But a striker has to be the top priority.
“They will get one, I’m sure. They’ve still got great pulling power.
“I’m sure by the time the season starts, they’ll have someone in place.

“You can’t rely on Fernandes and Rashford as the main goalscorers. You need someone clinical, and they always have done.
“Going back to the days of Van Nistelrooy, Cole, Van Persie, Rooney, Berbatov. They need a top number nine in that mould.”
