Agbonlahor: Aston Villa tipped to get one over Mourinho after reveal

Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Douglas Luiz to snub reported interest from Roma and sign a new contract at Aston Villa.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer insisted the club are more attractive than Jose Mourinho’s side.

Italian outlet Il Messaggero (via Sport Witness) reported on 24 August that Roma the Brazil international was a target for Roma as they searched for a new central midfielder.

Luiz has just two years left to run on his current Aston Villa contract and took to Twitter last week (2 September) to insist he is “happy” at the club.

The 23-year-old has started the last two Premier League games for Dean Smith’s side after returning to training late following the Olympics.

He was a key part of the side that won gold at this summer’s tournament in Tokyo.

Asked whether a new deal could be in the pipeline for Luiz, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Yes, I think so. Get him signed up.

“I look at it and think Roma or Aston Villa? I’d rather be at Aston Villa than Roma. I know Mourinho is there which might be a big pull but they’re never going to win Serie A. They missed out on the Champions League places.

“I think he should stay where he is and he’s happy at Aston Villa.”

Luiz has now played 78 times for the Midlands club across all competitions after moving from Manchester City in the summer of 2019.

He also has five senior Brazil caps to his name but is not part of the squad during the current international break.
