Agbonlahor: Barry and Chukwuemeka tipped for new roles amid confirmed Aston Villa news
Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Louie Barry and Carney Chukwuemeka for a role in the Aston Villa first-team next season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer delivered his verdict after it was reported Dean Smith does not want the pair to go out on loan next season.
Birmingham Live reported on 5 July Chukwuemeka and Barry will remain at Villa Park while the majority of the club’s young talent will head out on loan.
Barry has subsequently agreed a one-year extension to his contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2024.
“When a manager does that it means the manager is going to have you around the first-team training every day.,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“That sounds like he’ll be in training with the first team every day and you’re going to be on the bench.

“You’ll play your Under-23s games if you’re not playing for the first team.
“For me, he will have seen how much they have developed in the Under-23s so there’s no need to go on loan. There’s a big difference when I was younger, it was better to go on loan because you were that far away from the first team.
“Maybe some of the others that are not as close as those two may look at loans. The way the Under-23s set up is at Villa, the players can learn a lot by staying there and playing games for them.”
Barry shot to prominence in January when he scored Villa’s only goal in their 4-1 defeat to Liverpool in the FA Cup as they were forced to field a team of youngsters due to a covid outbreak in the senior squad.
Chukwuemeka featured in the final two Premier League games of last season.
