Agbonlahor can't believe 'massive' Chelsea blunder amid '£50m' Enzo Fernandez claim

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Chelsea have “massively overpaid” for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez after his British-record arrival on transfer deadline day.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Blues have paid “double” the 22-year-old’s true value.

Chelsea announced the signing of Fernandez on Wednesday (1 February).

Sky Sports updated later that day to claim that the Blues have paid a British-record £106.8million for the Benfica midfielder – who played a key role as Argentina won the World Cup last year (2022).

Fernandez, who only joined Benfica for £10million last summer (2022), has signed an eight-and-a-half-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

As per Transfermarkt, Chelsea have now paid out £540.3million on new arrivals this season following Todd Boehly’s takeover last year.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “They’ve massively overpaid.

“He signed for Benfica last summer for £10m. It’s a ridiculous figure that Chelsea have paid.

“He’s a player who definitely has quality, but they’ve probably paid double of what his actual value is. He’s worth about £50m.

“It just shows where Chelsea are at right now. Money doesn’t seem to be an issue for them.”

Chelsea sit 10th in the Premier League – ten points adrift of the Champions League places.

Graham Potter’s side moved to add Fernandez, Mykhalo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashille, Noni Maduke, Malo Gusto, Andrey Santos, David Datro Fofana, and Joao Felix this month.

The Blues must now choose which three signings to add to their Champions League squad ahead of their two-legged meeting with Borussia Dortmund later this month.
