Agbonlahor can’t believe West Ham could agree £90m Joao Palhinha deal after ‘staggering’ twist
Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed West Ham should turn attention to a deal for Kalvin Phillips with Fulham set to “dig their heels in” over Joao Palhinha.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed a move for the England international, 27, “makes more sense” for the Irons.
Football Insider revealed on 9 June that West Ham have made Palhinha their top summer target as they prepare for life without captain Rice – who is wanted by Arsenal and Man City.
However, according to the London Evening Standard (22 June), Fulham are planning to price the Irons out of a move for the midfielder by demanding a “staggering” £90million for his signature.
Palhinha scored four goals across 40 games in all competitions in the 2022-23 campaign – and recorded some of the best tackling and interception stats in the Premier League.
He joined Fulham just last summer (2022) for a reported fee of £20million.
When asked if an agreement for Palhinha could be found, Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I do like him, but he’s not going to come cheap.
“Fulham are going to dig their heels in.
“You’re getting £90-100million for Rice – do you want to spend a big portion of it on Palhinha?
“I’d much rather go after Kalvin Phillips, and try and tempt him away.
“He should be looking to leave City. He’s not been involved – and he’s not going to play any games next season unless he leaves.

“He won’t go to the Euros.
“I feel Phillips makes more sense – it’s the right move for West Ham and for him.”
