Agbonlahor: Defoe tipped for behind-the-scenes Rangers role after major update

Jermain Defoe is “one of the best ever finishers” in Premier League history and would be a great addition to the Rangers coaching staff.

That is the view of former Aston Villa and England forward Gabriel Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 38-year-old’s future.

This site reported last week Defoe is likely to end his spell in Glasgow when his current deal expires at the end of the season.

The ex-Spurs marksman is open to joining Steven Gerrard’s coaching staff at Ibrox as the first step into his managerial career.

Defoe has been limited to just four starts across all competitions this season but Agbonlahor has suggested he could play a big role behind-the-scenes if he joins the coaching staff.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Steven Gerrard will know what experience he can bring and coaching tips to the strikers.

“Jermain Defoe is one of the best ever finishers in the Premier League, for me. Left foot, right foot he’s up there in the top five best-ever finishers.

“I’m sure that’s something Steven Gerrard would love on his coaching team.”

Defoe, 38, scored 162 Premier League goals in 496 games across spells with West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Bournemouth.

That puts him eighth in the all-time list level behind Robbie Fowler, Thierry Henry, Frank Lampard, Sergio Aguero, Andrew Cole, Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer.

In other news, a top pundit has tipped Steven Davis to retire at Rangers after a big update.
