Agbonlahor expects blizzard of 'top' signings at Aston Villa as 'exciting' deal agreed

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Aston Villa have made a “big statement” with the “exciting” appointment of ex-Barcelona director of football Mateu Alemany.

The former Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the new hire should be capable of bringing “top, top players” to his old club.

Sources told this site on Friday night (5 May) that Aston Villa have reached a full agreement with Alemany, 60, following his Barcelona resignation.

Alamany was instrumental in bringing the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Andreas Christensen and Raphinha to the Nou Camp.

He and manager Unai Emery are expected to work together to bring top targets to Villa Park in the summer transfer window.

Aston Villa could have European football to help lure stars to the club if they can maintain their good form in the final games of the 2022-23 campaign.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s a big statement.

“He’s worked at Barcelona and if you look at the players he’s signed for them – you can see that Aston Villa won’t be going for average players any more.

“He’s going to come in and go for top, top players.

“It’s a really exciting time to be around the club.

“They could have sat comfortably and kept Johan Lange, but it looks like they’re changing it – and it’s exciting.

“Unai Emery really wants this club in Europe and wants us to be fighting in this top seven year on year.”
