Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested Dwight Gayle could receive a 50 per cent pay cut if Newcastle United suffer relegation this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England and Aston Villa striker delivered his verdict after it was reported Gayle had agreed a new deal at St. James’ Park.
The Athletic‘s David Ornstein reports the 31-year-old has committed his future to the club until 2024.
His previous contract was set to expire at the end of the season meaning he could have left the club on a free transfer.
Gayle has only started two Premeir League games all season but Agbonlahor has insisted it is a smart move to tie him down.
He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “The way football works is that, he’ll get half if they go down.
“They’ll be a set wage if they stay in the Premier League and a set wage if they go down. He’ll be wanting to do his best so his money doesn’t go down.
“I understand it. If they go down, they’ve got a player who’s done it in the Championship for many, many years. If they stay up, they’ve got a player who can score goals in the Premier League as well. It makes sense to do it.”
Gayle fired in 23 goals in 32 Championship games for Newcastle in the 2016/17 season as they won the division.
In the Premier League, he has found the net 26 times in 130 appearances, including 62 starts, across his time with Crystal Palace and Newcastle.
