Agbonlahor: Goldson may down tools at Rangers after Campbell reveal

Connor Goldson will stop putting his body on the line for Rangers as he approaches the end of his contract, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Goldson is taking a risk by letting his contract run down but it could pay off if he avoids injury.

Jordan Campbell of the Athletic reported last Thursday (23 December) it is unlikely the defender will leave in January despite his deal expiring at the end of the season.

After a shaky start to the season, the 29-year-old has regained his form and has not missed a minute of Scottish Premiership action under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

“I can understand it from the player, he’s thinking ‘I don’t want to sign, I want to get more money somewhere else’,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“If he then leaves on a free he’s going to get even more money so I can understand it from a player’s point of view.

“From a club’s point of view, what they would get in terms of a fee from him would be so minimal anyway they might as well use him until the end of the season.

“I can see it from both the club and the player’s perspective.

“As a player, it’s a gamble you’ve got to take. You might get a bad injury and you’re in a bad situation but I feel players in that situation might not go into tackles as viciously as you do when you have that security of a contract.

“It might affect his performance. In those last six or seven games, I can’t see him going into those tackles when there’s a chance of getting injured.

“There’s definitely a risk that I wouldn’t want to take but if it comes off and you don’t get injured it’s a risk that’s worth taking.”
