Agbonlahor hits back after critical John McGinn reveal at Aston Villa

Aston Villa fans should not be demanding more goals from John McGinn because Steven Gerrard is asking him to play a different role.

That is the view of Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after McGinn’s prolific goalscoring form for Scotland continued.

The 27-year-old scored his 14th goal for his country as they beat Ukraine 3-0 at Hampden Park last week (22 September).

He hinted at his frustrations on Twitter after the game when he noted it was “about time” he found the net.

The midfielder has not scored for Aston Villa since a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in November 2021.

According to FBRef, McGinn has not had a shot on target in seven attempts in the top-flight this season.

“It’s hard to judge between his performances for Scotland and for Villa,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Sometimes, on international duty, you get different instructions from club football. You don’t know what Gerrard is telling him to do.

“I know John McGinn and I am sure he will want to score more goals for Aston Villa.

“He will try and get some of those positions like he did for Scotland, further forward. I’m sure he would love to do that because he’s a great striker of the ball and can get into those positions.

“But you don’t know what the manager wants from him so it’s hard to ask him to get higher up the pitch and in those positions when the manager is telling him otherwise.”
