Agbonlahor hits back as Aymeric Laporte fumes at confirmed Man City news

Aymeric Laporte should not be worried about his omission from the 2021-22 PFA team of the year despite his “top” performances for Man City, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed players do not give the team of the year too much thought when casting their votes.

The PFA announced their team last week (9 June) with Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool and Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger the two centre-backs who won the most votes.

Laporte, 28, took to Twitter the next morning (10 June) to express his disappointment with the result and even posted his stats from the 2021-22 season on his Instagram.

Man City also responded with a highlights package of their centre-back on their Twitter account the same day.

“The problem with the PFA [team of the year] is it’s picked by players,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“When I was a player and I had to pick my team, I sort of just went with the names that stand out. It was [Rio] Ferdinand, it was [John] Terry, it was [Wayne] Rooney.

“That’s what it’s like with players now. Players will get asked before they’re about to leave training who their team is and they’ll think ‘Ok, [Mohamed] Salah, Van Dijk’.

“Laporte is a name that you wouldn’t even think of, even though he’s a top defender. You just wouldn’t think of him.”

Laporte played 33 times in the Premier League in the 2021-22 season – more than any other City defender.

He played a key role as Pep Guardiola’s side won a fourth league title in five seasons.
