Agbonlahor hits back at Carragher in Liverpool vs Chelsea argument

Gabby Agbonlahor has weighed in with his support for John Terry in a Liverpool vs Chelsea argument on social media with Jamie Carragher.

With Liverpool’s stellar start to the season, Virgil van Dijk continues to impress with his defensive displays.

In light of these performances, former Reds centre-back Carragher expressed his delight via X, calling Van Dijk “the best CB we’ve ever seen in the PL.”

This sparked a debate on social media, with a viral video from Rory Jennings insisting that title belongs to either Terry or ex-Man United star Rio Ferdinand.

But Carragher fired back, saying: “VVD is quicker, better on the ball and in the air than both, and doesn’t play alongside a [Nemanja] Vidic or [Ricardo] Carvalho!”

He added, “No one gives VVD a problem. They were two great CB’s but as I’ve said, this isn’t close.”

Former Aston Villa forward Agbonlahor then replied to his fellow pundit to back the Stamford Bridge legend, arguing “JT was top on the ball Carra”.

Liverpool must keep all Van Dijk, Salah and Alexander-Arnold

Football Insider opinion

The Dutchman has a contract offer in place, which has Liverpool fans thrilled, although there has yet to be a breakthrough in talks. But the Premier League giants appear to be keen on retaining his services moving forward under Arne Slot [The Athletic].

Trent Alexander-Arnold has also been in the headlines, not just because he’s been outstanding, but also because of a possible move to Real Madrid.

A player of his quality and age is rarely allowed to get towards the end of their deal, so this is a situation described as “unusual” by David Ornstein.

Despite Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk both being 33 years of age, they’ve proven they can still show quality at the top level.

Chelsea
John Terry has been held up against Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk as the best ever.

Salah displayed a momentous performance in the 3-3 draw with Newcastle last night (4 December).

He provided an assist and two goals in a second-half performance to savour. The 33-year-old now holds the record for the most matches with a goal and an assist, with 37. He surpassed Wayne Rooney last night.

The Anfield legend broke the record, having played 214 fewer games than the Englishman [Squawka].

Sources have told Football Insider that the Merseysiders are in a comfortable position from a PSR perspective and can offer Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold increased terms if they want to.

It’s unthinkable that any player with the emotional attachment Alexander-Arnold has with Liverpool fans, or the quality of output Salah provides, or the defensive nous Van Dijk brings, could leave Anfield.
