Agbonlahor hits back at Sky Sports pundit's Jack Grealish-Villa claim

Troy Deeney is wrong to suggest John McGinn is more important than Jack Grealish to Aston Villa, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer heaped praise on McGinn but insisted Grealish’s “cutting edge” cannot be underestimated.

Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Villa’s 3-1 loss to Manchester United, Watford striker Deeney said: “I think McGinn’s more important than Jack. When he plays really well, the whole team plays really well.”

He suggested the Villa squad are overreliant on Grealish when he plays while McGinn lifts the standards of his teammates.

Both are arguably the first names on the Villa team sheet but Agbonlahor does not agree with Deeney’s assesment.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I wouldn’t agree with that.

“Grealish is definitely more important.

“John McGinn is an outstanding player, he does a great job for the team and is a very talented player.

“But everything runs through Jack. Without Jack, Villa lose a lot of cutting edge going forward.

“Teams aren’t as worried about Villa’s attacking threat as much as they are when Jack’s in the team.

“We’ve seen it when Grealish has played. West Ham, for instance, played two right-backs against him! When he’s in, teams are petrified, they’re changing their formations.

“I disagree with that comment.”

Grealish has missed Villa’s last 12 games with a shin injury and they have struggled without him.

Dean Smith’s have won just three times and scored 13 goals in those fixtures that include games against all three relegated sides.
