Agbonlahor in no doubt about Liverpool agreeing Roberto Firmino deal after latest

Jurgen Klopp will be keen to keep Roberto Firmino at Liverpool, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Firmino will have a key role to play for Liverpool in 2022-23 as Darwin Nunez cannot start every game.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo on Sunday (31 July), the Brazil international confirmed he wanted to stay at Anfield amid reported interest from Juventus.

The 30-year-old, who started the 3-1 win over Man City in the Community Shield on Saturday (30 July), only has a year left to run on his contract.

Football Insider reported earlier this year (12 February) that the Reds were lining up a contract offer for Firmino.

“I don’t think he should look past this season, to be honest,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Liverpool will rotate. Nunez won’t play every game, there will be times when Jota plays as a striker, and Firmino and Nunez will be on the bench.

“When Firmino starts and Jota and Nunez are on the bench, he’s got to take his chance, he’s got to score goals and put in good performances.

“I’m sure Klopp will want to keep him around because you can’t rely on just Nunez. What if he is out of form or got injured? Firmino’s perfect to have there.

“They’ve got so many competitions they want to win as well. You saw last season they were in all competitions to the end.

“It’s definitely a good idea to keep Firmino.”

Firmino has scored 98 times and provided 74 assists in 328 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool.

He moved to the club from Hoffenheim in the summer of 2015 under Brendan Rodgers.
