Agbonlahor is 'seriously questioning' Everton amid savage Neal Maupay verdict

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed he is “seriously questioning” transfer chiefs at Everton after the misguided signing of Neal Maupay.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 26-year-old is not capable of playing in a one-man strikeforce due to his lack of size and speed.

Maupay has played five combined minutes in Everton’s last two Premier League fixtures, with natural winger Demerai Gray instead tasked with leading the line.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is out injured yet again and has played just once under Sean Dyche following the former Burnley manager’s appointment in January.

Maupay cost a reported £15million and was signed after the Toffees lost 2021-22 top scorer Richarlison to Tottenham last summer (2022).

Everton sit 15th in the Premier League but are clear of the drop zone by just one point.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think he can play a part in this relegation battle, but I can’t see him starting going forward.

“But when you’re playing one up front, you either want someone who is going to be strong and win headers, or someone who is quick and can stretch defences.

“Neal Maupay doesn’t suit any of those attributes. He can’t bring others into play, he isn’t fast enough to beat a defender.

“Calvert-Lewin’s injury problems could be really costly, yet again for Everton.

“Maupay is not the answer. I’m seriously questioning why he was signed in the first place.”
