Agbonlahor issues verdict on Rangers appointing Ralph Hasenhuttl after 'big' reveal

Ralph Hasenhuttl deserves a break and should not replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst as the Rangers manager, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker delivered his verdict as Van Bronckhorst’s job at Ibrox hangs by a thread.

Sources told Football Insider last week (14 November) that Rangers are weighing up whether to sack the 47-year-old after a poor run of results.

An Ibrox source updated to Football Insider on Friday (18 November) that discussions are still taking place behind the scenes over the manager’s position.

The Gers went into the World Cup break already nine points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership after crashing out of the Champions League with the worst-ever group campaign.

Hasenhuttl has been out of work since leaving Southampton earlier this month (7 November).

Rangers director of football Ross Wilson worked with the 55-year-old at St. Mary’s before moving north of the border.

As quoted by the Daily Mail when Wilson left (17 April 2019), the Austrian admitted his colleague’s departure was a “big loss”.

Asked whether the pair could be reunited at Ibrox, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Hasenhuttl, I think he deserves a break, to be honest.

“He’s had four years at Southampton and got the sack so I don’t think he’s in the right mind frame for a job as hard as Rangers.

“With how far they are behind Celtic with the nine points, it’s going to be a stressful job for any manager.”

Hasenhuttl was in charge of Southampton for 173 games and ended his spell with a win rate of 34.7 per cent.

He ensured their Premier League status year on year but he never guided them to a top-half finish.
