Agbonlahor: Liverpool tipped to sign Frenkie de Jong on one condition after £73.5m deal agreed

Liverpool will only be able to sign Frenkie de Jong if they finish in the top four, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted Liverpool can forget about De Jong and Jude Bellingham if they do not qualify for the Champions League next season.

ESPN reported earlier this week (21 October) that Liverpool, along with Chelsea and Man United, are interested in signing the 25-year-old if he decides to leave Barcelona in January.

Man United

Man United agreed a £73.5million deal with Barcelona in the summer before De Jong decided to stay in Spain.

However, the Netherlands international’s game time has been limited at Barca and he has started just six La Liga games this term.

Asked whether De Jong would move to Liverpool, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It wouldn’t surprise me.

“But it’s very difficult at the moment to decide on transfers because Liverpool are in a battle, a real battle for top four.

“You can’t predict any transfers until the end of the season when we know the positions and they are guaranteed.

“In previous seasons, you would start talking now because Liverpool would be guaranteed to be in the top two, top three. Now they are not, they are in a battle for the top four.

“If they don’t get in the top four, they can forget about De Jong, they can definitely forget about Bellingham.

“They are in a real battle at the moment.”

Liverpool

De Jong still has just under four years left on his contract at Camp Nou.

He has played 154 times across all competitions for Barca, chipping in with 14 goals and 18 assists.
