Agbonlahor: Phil Foden may be set for extended period on sidelines as Man City claim issued

Phil Foden may deserve to start for England due to his form for Man City but he may not get his chance, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker suggested Gareth Southgate will be reluctant to change his starting XI after their thumping 6-2 win over Iran in their opening group game on Monday (21 November).

Foden replaced Mason Mount after 71 minutes at the Khalifa International Stadium when England were already 5-1 up.

The 22-year-old has scored eight goals and provided three assists in 20 games, including 14 starts, across all competitions for Man City this season.

As quoted by the Guardian last week (17 November), Foden admitted England has not seen the best of him yet.

“For me, Phil Foden does deserve to start in this England team,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“But when they are playing like they are without him, you cannot afford to change the team.

“The next game, against the USA, he won’t start because I feel it will be exactly the same team. He might come on and score the winner and play really well so he gets a start in the Wales game.

“Then Gareth Southgate has got a decision to make in the round of 16. Does he play him? Does he bring someone else in?

“This is a good problem for England to have. When Phil Foden gets a chance he has to show that Man City form for England and that he deserves to start a game.”

Foden has scored twice and provided six assists in 18 games for England.

The Stockport-born ace is yet to register a goal or an assist in a major tournament for the Three Lions.
