Agbonlahor: Premier League should stop Wolves signings as six deals lined up

The Premier League should introduce a rule to stop clubs like Wolves from having too many non-British players, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker delivered his verdict as Julen Lopetegui looks to overhaul his squad.

The Times reported last week (16 December) that Wolves want to sign six players in January and the new manager wants to target British players.

The club let Conor Coady and Morgan Gibbs-White leave in the summer meaning Max Kilman and Nathan Collins are the only senior players in the squad fro Britain or Ireland.

“It would be nice and it’s about time, to be honest [for Wolves to sign British players],” Agbonlahor told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.

“I feel like they should not be allowed to sign so many foreign players. You look at their squad and how many English players are in their starting XI? I don’t think that’s right.

“You look at other clubs and they have so many English and British players in their team.

“Maybe it worked for Wolves a few years ago but it’s not working at the moment.

“Sometimes in the Premier League, you need that English core who are used to the conditions and the culture.

“I think that’s something the new manager will be looking at because you can’t have the whole team Portuegese based, to be honest.

“It’s nice to get a mixture of English and other foreign players but not an English club with a Portuguese base. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

“The rules should be that it is unacceptable. If you were going to a Portuegese club and there was only one Portuegese player, I think that’s unacceptable.

“At a club, half of your first-team squad should be from that country.”

In other news, an ex-Fifa official has lambasted the PGMOL after a landmark Wolves development as a “fine and suspension” should have been issued.
