Rangers boss Gerrard will be 'perfect' Newcastle manager and 'I want to play for him' - pundit

Steven Gerrard would be the “perfect” manager for Newcastle United, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Gerrard’s reputation within the game means he would be able to attract “big players” to St. James’ Park.

A Newcastle source told Football Insider (October 12) the Rangers boss is one of a number of names set to be sounded out by the new Newcastle regime about the position.

It is understood Brendan Rodgers of Leicester City and Everton’s Rafa Benitez are the other top targets.

Gerrard has been in charge of Rangers for just over three years and delivered a historic 55th Scottish Premiership title last season with an unbeaten campaign.

The Englishman has won 120 of his 185 games in charge of the Ibrox giants across all competitions, a win rate of 64.9 per cent.

And Agbonlahor has insisted he deserves his chance in the Premier League.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I would give Steven Gerrard a chance.

“Steven Gerrard with a low budget has done well and got Rangers winning the title. With a budget, he’ll do even better.

“He’s going to attract big players. He was a world-class player, a big, big-name player with a reputation. If I’m a player now I want to play for him, all day. Everything about his character was top.

“He’s proven it as a manager now. For me, Steven Gerrard would be a perfect appointment.”

Gerrard is under contract at Ibrox until the summer of 2024.

He currently has the club top of the Scottish Premiership, one point clear of Hearts in second, after eight games.
