Agbonlahor: Rangers on course for £10m+ jackpot after Ibrox news

Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Rangers to qualify for their Champions League group stages.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward insisted it would be a “big” achievement if the Gers were to reach the group stages.

They lost the first leg of their tie with Malmo 2-1 but a late Steven Davis goal kept Rangers’ hopes alive.

With no away goals rule this season, Rangers need to beat the Swedish champions by two clear goals at Ibrox next week.

If they beat Malmo they will face Olympiakos or Ludogorets in a two-leg tie for a place in the group stages.

Goal report clubs in the Champions League group stages will bank a guaranteed £13million with a further £2.3million per win.

Asked whether he thinks the Ibrox giants can reach the group stages, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It’s doable, definitely.

“There’s no point entering the Champions League if you don’t think you can beat the teams in the qualifying rounds.

“They’re quite decent teams but they must be beating those teams if you want to be competing in the Champions League.

“If you can’t beat Malmo you would get a good beating by the teams in the group stages.

“It’s a good test and to get through would be big. I can see it.”

Rangers have not reached the Champions League group stages since the 2010-11 campaign.

They reached the Europa League round of 16 last season before being narrowly beaten by Slavia Prague.

In other news, Gerrard must be “over the moon” as an SPFL rule change is floated.
