Agbonlahor: Rangers stars considering their futures after Van Bronckhorst update

Senior Rangers stars will consider their long-term futures soon after the new manager is appointed, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted the players will not make a snap decision following Steven Gerrard’s departure.

Gerrard had built up the Rangers squad over three-and-a-half years and led them to a 55th Scottish Premiership title last season before quitting for Villa last week.

The Ibrox giants are yet to appoint a replacement and have placed David McCallum, Brian Gilmour, Jermain Defoe and Colin Stewart in interim charge ahead of their League Cup semi-final with Hibs.

Sky Sports reported yesterday (November 17) the Gers are close to agreeing a deal in principle with Giovanni van Bronckhorst to become Gerrard’s successor.

Asked whether Gerrard’s departure will have his former players wanting to quit Ibrox, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I don’t think so. not straight away.

“You have got to wait for a new manager to be appointed and come in, and then they will consider their future.

“If I am the new manager going in there, I’m not changing much with what they have achieved. They are top of the league again by four points, why would you go in there and change much?

“They’ll be fine, they’ll just wait to see what the new manager has in mind and take it from there.”

Van Bronckhorst spent three years as a Rangers player between 1998 and 2001 and won five major trophies at the club.

His last job in management was with Chinese club Guangzhou R&F and he has enjoyed a successful stint in charge of Feyenoord.

In other news, another Rangers coach has been tipped to quit Ibrox after confirmed news on Monday.
