Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Rangers to strike early and secure a deal for a new striker at the beginning of the summer transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England striker suggested Steven Gerrard will need to sign a replacement for Alfredo Morelos before he’s sold as his potential exit could drag on late into the summer.

Football Insider revealed Rangers are already laying the groundwork for a top-class forward capture.

One target is Peterborough’s red hot striker Jonson Clarke-Harris who grabbed a hat-trick this week to take his tally for the season to 25.

Morelos has not hidden his ambition of playing in the English Premier League and recently told Colombian radio station Caracol it’s his “biggest dream”.

The 24-year-old has been the subject of much transfer speculation during his time in Glasgow and Agbonlahor can see that continuing this summer.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think they’ll wait [if they sell him].

“They know how good he is so they’ll want to get the best fee for him.

“I don’t see them rushing in and selling him for the wrong fee.

“I think they’ll wait and get the money they feel they deserve.

“I’m sure they might sign a striker early on in the window just in case Morelos leaves. But I’m sure Steven Gerrard has a plan.”

Morelos has scored 16 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions for Gerrard’s side this season.

He also became Rangers’ record goalscorer in European Competitions early on in the campaign.
