Agbonlahor stunned as Aurier close to quitting Tottenham for PSG

Gabby Agbonlahor has admitted he is “surprised” Paris Saint-Germain want to re-sign Serge Aurier from Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward insisted the defender is not at the level required to win the Champions League.

Football Insider revealed Aurier’s move back to the French capital is “95 per cent done” and are confident a deal will be concluded shortly after the season finishes.

PSG will end up paying at least £20m in transfer fee and wages on signing the Ivory Coast international.

He spent three years with the Champions League semi-finalists before signing for Tottenham in the summer of 2017 and the contract he signed then is set to expire next summer.

Former boss Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff felt the 28-year-old was “uncoachable”.

And Agbonlahor has insisted Tottenham will be delighted to see the back of the erratic full-back.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “They don’t learn their lesson do they, PSG?

“He’s not at the standard for PSG to win the Champions League. I’m surprised they want to bring him back, to be honest. But you don’t know what goes on behind the scenes.

“Very strange but I’m sure Spurs will be happy to get rid of him.”

Aurier has played 110 games for Spurs across and all competitions, including 27 appearances this season.

Matt Doherty was brought in as competition for him last summer but neither has emerged as first-choice and Japhet Tanganga started at right-back in their last game.

In other news, a Tottenham big name is set to stay after talks with Daniel Levy.
