Agbonlahor suggests Joe Aribo has quit Rangers for ‘£14.6m’
Joe Aribo may have signed a £70,000-a-week contract at Southampton after completing his move from Rangers, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed the move was right for both the player and the club.
Southampton confirmed on Saturday (9 July) that Aribo had completed a move to the Premier League club and had signed a four-year deal.
A £70,000-a-week four-year deal would represent a £14.6million outlay on wages alone.
The Athletic reported last week (6 July) that the Saints had paid a £6million upfront fee for Aribo and the deal could reach £10million with various add-ons.
Asked for his verdict on Aribo’s move, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It feels very cheap.
“Maybe it’s right for both the player and the club. The player will have seen the Premier League and a double-your-money offer.
“It’s like Goldson, he was trying to do the same and maybe didn’t get the offer he thought he would do.
“Rangers cannot match the Premier League wages, they probably said ‘Aribo, you know what, you’ve been a great servant for three years, we’ll let you go’. It’s fair, to be honest.
“Aribo’s probably signed for £60,000-a-week or £70,000-a-week.”

Aribo spent three years at Rangers and played in 148 games across all competitions, scoring 26 goals, providing 25 assists and winning the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup.
He featured in 57 games across all competitions in the 2021-22 season and scored the Gers’ goal in their defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final.
In other news, a club is set to sign an in-form Rangers player this week.
