Agbonlahor swipes at Podence but hails Wolves for axing big guns

Gabby Agbonlahor has hailed Bruno Lage for making “big” changes at Wolves despite swiping at Daniel Podence’s work ethic.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker delivered his verdict after Lage recorded his second Premier League win as Wolves boss against Southampton.

He dropped both Adama Traore and Francisco Trincao to the bench as Podence and Hwang Hee-Chan came into the starting XI.

According to FBRef, Traore’s 35 shot-creating actions is the highest in the Premier League along with Jack Grealish. However, Grealish has played more minutes than the Wolves star.

Trincao moved to Molineux on a season-long loan deal from Barcelona in the summer with an option to buy but he is yet to register a goal or assist for his new club.

But their replacements did not shine at St. Mary’s as Raul Jimenez stole the show by scoring his first goal since returning from a fractured skull.

And Agbonlahor has suggested Traore and Trincao could still make their way back into Lage’s starting XI.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Sometimes, when you’re not getting results as a manager you have to change things, you have to make big decisions. That’s what he did.

“Did Podence do well? Not really. It was Jimenez doing most of the work going forward.

“It’s just nice to have competition for places, keeps your players hungry. I’m sure that’s what they’ve got there now.”

Wolves currently sit in 14th-place after two wins and four defeats in their opening six Premier League games.

They host strugglers Newcastle United at the weekend before the October international break.
