Agbonlahor tells Tottenham to sign ‘their own Virgil van Dijk’ with four stars set to be binned
Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Tottenham to sign “their own Virgil van Dijk” in order to fix their defensive concerns.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Antonio Conte’s side “have only got one good defender” in a savage attack on the likes of Clement Lenglet, Eric Dier, and Davinson Sanchez.
Tottenham snapped a run of conceding first in each of their last 10 games after beating Crystal Palace 4-0 at Selhurst Park on Wednesday (4 January).
World Cup-winning star Cristian Romero partnered Lenglet and Dier in Conte’s trademark three-man defence.
Football Insider revealed last month (10 December) that Tottenham have emerged as frontrunners to sign Inter Milan and Netherlands defender Stefan de Vrij.
The Lilywhites have also been linked with a move for World Cup breakthrough star Josko Gvardiol.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “They have to go out and get their own Virgil van Dijk.
“When they brought in Lenglet, I was surprised – because he’d been found out at Barcelona. He doesn’t get into this Spurs team.
“Ben Davies has got no pace. Eric Dier has no pace, and he’s calamitous. Sanchez is an accident waiting to happen.
“Romero is a top player, good on the ball – but he needs two partners.
“Tottenham like to play with a three, but they’ve only got one good defender.

“They need some players in this area if they’re going to be anywhere near the top end of the table, and I think it’s somewhere where you need to spend big.
“There’s no point bringing in any more players like Lenglet.”
