Agbonlahor: This is why Townsend signing should 'excite' Everton fans

Everton have been “crying out” for a quick winger like Andros Townsend, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Townsend will slot seamlessly into the Blues’ front three alongside Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Everton confirmed earlier this week that the 30-year-old has signed a two-year deal after he left Crystal Palace.

He became Rafael Benitez’s first signing as Toffees boss but has been followed through the door by Asmir Begovic and Demarai Gray.

Townsend has vast Premier League experience through his time with Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers.

And Agbonlahor has insisted it is a signing that should excite the Goodison Park faithful.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “He’s a good player with proven Premier League quality and to get him on a free transfer as well, that’s amazing.

“I’ve been saying for a long time that Everton have been crying out for a quick winger on the right-hand side. They’ve got Richarlison on the left, cutting in on his right foot. They needed a left-footer cutting in of the right with pace.

“Rodriguez has done well but he doesn’t offer that speed that you need in the Premier League.

“Townsend can do that and it’s an exciting signing for Everton.”

Townsend previously played under Benitez at Newcastle United in 2016 where he scored four times and provided two assists in 16 games.

It was not enough to prevent Newcastle’s relegation and he moved to Palace that summer as a result.
