Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested Newcastle United will only sign Kristoffer Ajer from Celtic this summer if they stay in the Premier League.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward claimed it is the “dream” for any player in Scotland to make the move down south.
The Daily Mail report Newcastle are ready to launch an £8milllion bid for the Norway international who will enter the final year of his Celtic contract in the summer.
His international manager recently urged him to quit Parkhead as he is playing within himself in Scotland.
As relayed by the Scottish Sun, Stale Solbakken claimed: “Kristoffer has to change the league now, he must. He does not have enough challenges in everyday life.”
Asked for his thoughts on Solbakken’s comments and a potential move to Newcastle, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It’s not good timing and it doesn’t really need to be said.
“He’s playing some tough games and he’s getting tested.
“Celtic are a massive club. There’s no need for the Norway manager to think like that at all.
“Any player playing in Scotland would dream of playing in the Premier League, it’s the best league in the world.
“It’s definitely possible. He’ll just have to wait and see where Newcastle are at the end of the season.
“It would be a transfer that suits both clubs, definitely.”
Despite Celtic’s woeful pursuit of a historic 10th consecutive title, Ajer recently insisted this has been his best season for the Hoops.
He added: “At least that is the year I have developed the most. Where I feel I have taken the biggest step is that I make wiser choices defensively.”
