Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Keinan Davis to explode at Aston Villa after he netted his first Premier League goal.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Villa captain admitted he was “really shocked” it took so long for the 23-year-old to find the net as he demonstrated “everything you need to be a Premier League striker” in training.
Davis scored a late equaliser in Villa’s 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion last Sunday – his first goal in 29 top-flight appearances.
That includes four starts, but all of his 11 league appearances this season have come from the bench.
“I felt sorry for him, to be honest,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“As a striker, as a young player, you don’t want that record of not scoring a Premier League goal in almost 30 appearances.
“I was really shocked because the Keinan Davis that I saw at Villa training was a goalscorer. He had everything you need as a striker. That one going in now will set him off.
“But I think Keinan needs to start games. He’s got it all. Honestly, he’s strong, he’s quick, his left foot is a rocket. He’s got everything you need to be a Premier League striker.
“He just needs to stay injury-free and start games and then people will see why Dean Smith’s kept him around.”
Speaking after the game, Dean Smith told the Villa website the goal will give Davis a “big “boost of confidence”.
He added: “He’s such a likeable lad, he works hard, he’s hard to play against, all the lads will tell you that in training.”
